There are many programs which are set to start when the PC boots. Although, this makes it easy to access these programs directly, but they also slow down the boot up and use valuable resources. Some of these programs are hidden and some are located in the System tray (at the bottom right corner of the screen). These programs include, antivirus programs, productivity programs, and updaters. What makes things even more difficult is that some programs start up as a service and many users are afraid of changing the Windows services through the services manager.

In this tutorial, we are going to show you how you can disable startup programs using msconfig. Msconfig has been in around since Windows 95 days and is still part of Windows 10. Msconfig allows you to see not just the services but the startup programs which may be the cause for your computer running slow. To start msconfig, press Windows+R to open "Run" program (you can also access "Run" from Start menu). In the "Run", type "msconfig" and click on "OK". This will open "System Configuration" window.

Then the window opens up, you will see several tabs on the top of the window. The first tab to look at is the startup tab. Here, you will see a list of programs that starts with Windows and that are constantly running in the background. un-check the items you don't want to start at boot up. Caution, be careful not to turn off any antivirus, spyware or firewall program, otherwise you won't be protected against malware. The next tab you can look at is the services tab. Here, things may look a little difficult because you will see cryptic services that you aren't sure if Windows needs. You can put a check mark on "Hide all Microsoft services" to narrow down your choices. Again, be careful that you don't uncheck any program that you want running at startup like antivirus programs.

After un-checking the items, click on the apply button and then the ok button and when prompted to restart, select yes. Once the system reboots, you will get a System Configuration Utility message on the screen, just select Don't show again and click on the ok button.
