If you have Windows 10 Home and connect to the internet via wifi, you can disable automatic updates with the following steps:

Go to Start.
Click on the gear icon for settings.
     Click on Network & internet.
     Click on Wi-Fi.
Click on the wireless SSID you are using.
Scroll down until you see the Metered connection section.
Click on the set metered connection switch to turn on.

When you are ready to download updates again, you can go back to the wifi settings and turn the metered connection switch off again.
